Weblog Reflection

What skills have you gained regarding writing to an audience?

When writing articles for a weblog I quickly came to realise a few things. The first was that readability played a hug roll, having large blocks of text was an instant turn off and therefore they naturally needed to be broken up so that the audience would remain interested.

Regarding my target audience, I tried to keep my range as broad as possible so I kept the format of my writing and how it was broken up in a professional looking sense but also casual looking enough so that it would not immediately turn off readers.
In my writing recently I had begun to write things as statements or factual documents as I have been writing nothing but assignments but when writing for the weblog I tried to keep my audience in mind the whole time. I wrote as if trying to provoke discussion, I did this by using open ended statements that also hinted at a direct answer, leaving room for community input into the conversation.

What skills did you gain regarding design?

My goal for design was to keep things simple, but also active looking by adding colours, pictures etc, so that it would remain professional but not boring looking.
I tried to break up the text with paragraph spacing, relevant pictures and titles making the article much easier to read and understand as well as enjoyable.

For my general blog design, I chose a simple design that placed the sidebar on the right with a short snippet of text and leading picture for each article in the centre. By setting things out this way I gave my audience more options to chose from straight away, this was an important skill to learn because I was able to understand how an audience will likely respond to my content based on the initial visual impression as well as the rest of the visual content on the blog.

What is your view on blogging?

For a period of about eight months I used to run a blog myself that specialised in all things anime related, reviews, discussions and industry movements where all apart of my blog and from that I learned the power of blogging.
In short my view is a positive one, it allowed me to interact and engage in discussion in a semi-professional environment and improved my writing skills and knowledge of the internets functions considerably.
Blogging itself can be a powerful tool, however it does take a considerable amount of effort to run a successful blog and therefore shows that it is not all that different from a regular news or social media website with the except that you retain all the control.

Blogging is widespread and seems to blur lines with professional news mediums in many ways as of late, which in turn brings about more and also less opportunity in the industry. The reason I say this is that with so many options of news and entertainment becoming readily available with blogs it draws attention away from less specifically targeted professional outlets in and therefore less jobs are required. At the same time, blogs and the like have in many case lead to the creation of professional businesses so it’s a two sided coin.

Overall I have gained many skills in this assignment, through understand my audience, to the format of my writing to the appearance and design of my blog I believe I am a much more knowledgeable person having completed this assignment.

The Anime Manga Daisuki Blog Discussion

This blog is a personal favourite of mine and I frequent it regularly, however I did it for different reasons than I do many others. The anime and manga community in the west has a strong following of those with interest in art, even if they lack the ability themselves they will still have an interest in it themselves especially if it has something to do with the show/medium they are interest in.

The reason this blog works is because it understands it’s community and develops accordingly.  The blog includes news from the industry, pictures from recent episodes, art work from fans or the creator themselves. The posts are also frequent and come from a wide variety of shows so that the entire anime and manga community is entertained, not just those how are interested in romantic or the auction shows which attract an older male audience etc.

(sample of fan art posted on the blog)

The blog does have some flaws with its professionalism, sometimes art work or links will be posted that are inaccurate or not credited at all. The blog will also feature posts from other blogs that are usually funny but not necessarily relevant to this blog, which can often annoy audiences.

Overall this is a nice, light hearted blog that is designed from casual entertainment that appeals to the anime and manga community in the west and remains broad enough so that no genre feels isolated from the community. The Blog suffers from formatting issues and occasionally relevance but problems with the blog are generally limited.

The Editor’s Blog discussion

I found this blog by accident and was quite impressed with what I found depite some draw backs.  When looking at the blog straight on it is really not anything special, however it is very practical. All the information you would need it within a short scroll or a click on the side bar and all of which are very well labelled.

Links to articles, extended versions of the articles and specific sections on the side bar are all colour coded and make it much easier to find most things on the blog.
The blog could use some updating on it’s visuals however, as the pictures look somewhat dated and many just inappropriate for the content or the colouring conflicts with others.

As far as the content goes everything it seems to be quite proficient, the writing it in depth yet not to technical that most people would not be able to understand it. A range of topics are posted and are posted frequently on a scheduled basis.

The Blog has quite  a lot of community feed back which is something to aim for when writing a blog and the writer has succeeded in keeping true to her audience’s interests.

Overall, despite some design downfalls, ‘The Editor’s Blog’ is  a functional, education and well written  blog and it is clear that considerable effort has gone into its development.

Telstra moves to take triple-play market share

Media 4

Summary

Telstra is setting up a range of internet, phone and pay TV packages in order to gain more market share in the changing world of entertainment.

My Opinion

When America does something, Australia oh so often seems to follow suit and our internet providers seem to be no exception. Even though it has somewhat evened out over the years Telstra still holds a majority of the telecommunications industry through its many sub businesses and government contracts. In regards to pay tv, opposition is entirely inexistent and with the standard internet speeds in Australia to slow and problematic for online streaming services like Netflix.

This has lead to a natural deadlock and despite the monopoly Foxtel holds over pay tv people have unsurprisingly turned away from the rather expensive service leading even the most unlikely people towards internet piracy.

To be fair these new packages are good news for almost everybody; customers can get the content they want for a cheaper price, Telstra gains more market share and Telstra then has more money to spend on quality entertainment instead of Swamp People in semi-HD on repeat all day long.

In the end the battle is hardily won or lost, Foxtel is releasing deals which may lead to their competitors introducing similar, cheaper alternatives for users which is always a good thing.
