Teachers becoming forced to be the parent?

Media 1

Summary

John Stackhouse, a Christian scholar has said that that parents have handed the task of civilising their children for them. Stackhouse has said that parents are relying increasingly on teachers to morally educate their children. He also stated that the attitude of individual freedom and discovery was now being blow out or proportion stating: "it's all about freedom at the expense of responsibility".

My opinion

As someone who has recently graduated high school this idea seems completely illogical and Mr Stackhouse makes some very good points. It is undeniable true that parents are working more and family time generally consists of dinner time before children go off to their rooms to do (or not do) homework and the same with the parents. In saying this, it is still not an excuse to rid themselves of the responsibility they were assigned with upon having a child. I think to some degree it is important the teachers educate students on the matters of the main religions of this world so they can form an opinion of their own. I suppose it is hardly surprising as the object of family is becoming less valued in the eyes of the general public but it is an unfortunate consequence.

Teachers are trained to set an example, they are trained to educate effectively however they are not trained to teach johnny how to sit up straight at the table, speak clearly and be a respectable gentleman or woman. I understand that this effect is generally unintentional but when we see faults as a society, especially moral ones, we should work our very best to resolve them other wise we simply will not progress.
